Staying on track while vacationing…

NOT IMPOSSIBLE!!  I just got back from a short, mini-vacay to the beach and had an absolute blast.  I am a water baby at heart (I think I learned to swim before I could walk) and there is no where I am happier than by the ocean!  I firmly believe there are very few things a good dose of salt water can’t fix in life!

While I was beyond excited to be getting away, this was the first trip I was going to take (aside from work trips) that was purely for relaxation/enjoyment since I started on this health and fitness journey.  I have to admit there was a part of me that was a little nervous that my progress would get derailed and I would lose the momentum that I had built up over the past several months while I was going to be away.  I have really fallen in love with this new lifestyle I am living and how great I feel both physically and mentally that I want to do everything I can to stay on track.

Now don’t get me wrong, there is no way I would turn down an opportunity to be on the beach, especially because it had been close to two years since I had made it to one, but I did know I would have to adjust my routine and plan ahead a bit so as to not totally fall off the wagon.  I also knew that logically I was only going away for 3 days so really there wasn’t a risk of doing a lot of damage in that short amount of time, but nonetheless I was determined to make good choices and be as healthy as I could be away from home.  And this actually proved to be easier than I thought it would be!

I planned ahead of time that I would schedule my next rest day of the week on Friday when I would be traveling early and hitting the beach the rest of the day when I arrived so that day was already taken care of in terms of the workout component.  I also made sure to pack the car with healthy, easy to eat snacks such as gluten-free pretzels, fruit, and plenty of water so I wouldn’t be tempted to hit a drive thru or grab junk food during a pit stop.  The same thing went for packing for the days on the beach.  I packed the cooler full of food that I made ahead of time such as salads and cut up fruit along with taking healthy snack foods like low-fat popcorn and crackers and again plenty of water to stay hydrated!  For dinner both nights we had amazing seafood.  Friday was some of the freshest crab and shrimp I may have ever eaten and Saturday was fish tacos…blackened, not fried!

Fitting my workouts in was pretty easy as well!  Like I mentioned in my last post, I am now doing an 8 week program which is a combo of weights and cardio that I can do pretty much from anywhere with the help of my laptop or tablet.  I was able to get my 30 minute workouts in both Saturday and Sunday before we hit the beach right from the hotel room so I both stayed on track with the program and was able to enjoy the full rest of the day knowing I had met my goals for the weekend.

I wrapped up my beach getaway feeling both refreshed and really encouraged that I could easily translate this new healthy lifestyle while out of my normal routine.  Best of all I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything or had to sacrifice to stay on track.  I even got to enjoy some really yummy sea salt caramel fro-yo for dessert and didn’t feel an ounce of guilt over it (pic below)!  I think what I have taken away from this weekend is that while being really committed to a healthy way of life does take a bit of planning it is definitely doable and fairly easy to manage!  What’s even better is at this point, 7 months into this journey, this way of life has even become almost second nature to me.  I want to eat right, I want to workout, and I am able to prioritize these things without sacrificing other opportunities that I enjoyed previously.  To top it all off….I was able to put a bikini on for the first time in a long time and feel really proud and confident about the way I looked.  While there are of course still things I would like to work on and will continue to do so, feeling happy and comfortable in my own skin was priceless.  🙂

  1. Sticking to a specific diet while traveling at all can be a challenge. Nice work! It’s very helpful to keep highly nutritious, healthy snacks and meals on hand. Even if all you end up doing is snacking all day. Thanks for the reminder than it is possible!

    Im the same
    Love the ocean n love to keep fit too.
    Swim..surf..walk..run each day on the beach where i live n try to get a workout in each day too.

    Feel bad n dont sleep as well if i miss some sort of exe.

    Ive found that one of those rubber workout bands are great for travelling n also a solid bodyweight routine is invaluable.
    And theres alway a park or a bar somewhere for arms n back.
