When I first started on this road to get find a better me I was motivated primarily by a self-conscious desire to shed a few pounds. I wasn’t happy with how I looked or how my clothes were fitting or overall how I felt in my own skin. I knew I had gained weight and I was ready to lose it again. I wasn’t all that concerned, however, with my actual health per se, more about what my overeating and underexercising was doing to my waist line. While I also wanted to combat the constant fatigue and annoying illnesses I was always seeming to pick up, the primary focus of my journey back then was to be able to proudly look in the mirror again.
Now that I am about a year into it, however, my perspective has totally shifted. While I would be lying to you all if I said there wasn’t still a part of me that is motivated to look my best outwardly, my primary concern these days is for what is happening internally. Another wonderful and somewhat unexpected side effect of being on this path is that I have become extremely cognizant of how my body is feeling and operating and what it needs from me to perform at it’s best. I feel like I am in tune with it for the first time in a long long time and I want to do my best to make sure I a doing everything I can to take are of it.
I was sitting at my desk today thinking about how badly I had treated my body in the past and caught myself outwardly cringing. I sometimes am a little surprised that I have made it to ALMOST 40 years old! Nowadays, I am so in awe of what my body can do and how well it has responded to the changes I have made that I can’t even imagine going back to mistreating it. My focus has completely shifted from being weight-obsessed to being health-conscious. I think this shift has come around mostly because of how much better I FEEL since deciding it was time to take better care of myself. I went from being sick and on antibiotics for almost the entire year of 2017 to not being prescribed antibiotics one time in 2018! I went from at least three panic attacks a week in 2017 to maybe having 3 the entire year of 2018! And these are just a couple examples of how much better I am doing all the way around healthwise! It really is staggering how drastically and quickly your health can improve by just making a few positive lifestyle changes.
Having all these incredible changes happen from the inside out has only made me more invested in staying on track and even upping my health game. I am now constantly drawn to reading about and researching the healthiest foods to eat, the proper ways to exercise, how to help my body recover from strenuous workouts, the best vitamins and supplements to take to achieve my health goals, etc. I no longer measure success by what size my jeans are but by how much better I feel when I open my eyes each day.
I listen to my body now. When I am hungry, I eat. When I am tired, I rest. When I feel like I need to take a day off from working out, I take a day off. When I feel like something is off with my body, I investigate it instead of ignoring it. Some other ways I make sure I am healthy from the inside out are:
- Getting enough sleep 😴
- Taking a multi-vitamin daily- I’ve added Turmeric into the mix as well 💊
- Drinking enough water🥤
- Regular exercise – an average of 5 days a week🏋️
- Getting the right nutrition – less packaged, more whole foods. My superfood shake has done wonders in this department as well.🍍
- Properly dealing with stress (usually a good workout session goes a long way in this department now) 😖
- Continuing to educate myself- keeping my mind active, reading, taking classes 📝
- Being grateful! Just choosing to look at the positives instead of focusing on the negatives makes a huge difference! 🙏
My body, my health, my future are all very precious to me these days. Doing right by my body is my top priority and if in the end I look better on the outside then that’s just an amazing bonus! I am 100% committed to making daily choices that are in the best interest of my physical and mental well-being. What you put into your body is what you get out of it…whether it be the food you eat, the amount of exercise you fit into your busy schedule, the knowledge you take in through what you are reading, listening to and who you are surrounding yourself with. These things all make a huge difference in how healthy you are mentally and physically and let’s face it without our health, what do we really have? My advice, love yourself from the inside out you guys. Your body and mind will thank in ways you may not even be able to imagine right now!
Xoxoxo,
Beth

Dear Beth,
Well done you! You are an inspiration! Changing your life around is no easy task, but you have achieved a magnificent transformation, placing yourself in a positive cycle that keeps you going strong. Us humans are always habitual and prone to addictions. But with a little effort and determination, we can choose to be addicted to good habits! One thing I will humbly suggest, is to keep in mind that if you have a bad day, or a lazy morning, a naughty moment, even a good cry, it’s ok too! I tend to be overly strict with myself and get so disappointed if I fail to stick to my grand plan. I am slowly realizing that, part of success, is to accept that sometimes you will fall and get up again.
Thank you for being you! You are amazing:)
And thank you for following me too!
With love ❤️

Hi Theresa! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and write such a kind response! You are definitely right about being ok with falling and getting back up again. I constantly need to remind myself of that because I have the tendency to be overly enthusiastic and push myself sometimes when I shouldn’t. Learning to take a day off to rest is so important! Thank you again for the kind words….the support means the world to me! 💜😊💜

Agreed. Knowing how your body functions properly is but one of the many keys to overall wellness in life. The only problem is one cannot ignore a body’s notifications like one can with a smartphone. Otherwise, it’s the wrath of Human Nature (hangovers, anyone?). 😁

I am retired coming on three years. (I’m 60.) While working, I spent a large part of my day commuting back and forth between Orange County CA and downtown LA (a total of 50 miles per day), and it was difficult fitting in exercise. I am fortunate to now have the time to workout five times a week. I swim laps three times a week and do weight machines twice a week. The physical benefits have been enormous. I get out of bed in the morning without a backache. I can go up and down stairs with ease. I can lift my hands above my head without being in pain. Speaking of which….I’m off pain pills. It’s great to be able to optimize your body.

YES…that’s great to hear Sarah! I am a huge fan of swimming myself. I grew up doing it competitively and really want to start incorporating it into my workout routine. Such a great all around cardio workout without any impact on the old body! So amazing you were able to get off pain pills also…I hate taking pills so being able to be off of them is such a great feeling. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and read my post…it means the world to me!! 😊💜

“I no longer measure success by what size my jeans are but by how much better I feel when I open my eyes each day.” I loved this statement of yours and I couldn’t agree more with you.
We all age and our bodies wear down eventually. We should take care of it instead of pushing it into the brink.
I could feel the changes in my body. It isn’t the same compared to our younger years but thats the way it is.
Cheers to ageing gracefully 🙂

Great post. A healthy lifestyle can certainly lead to weight loss, but when people put to much emphasis on weight loss they can do it in unhealthy ways. I like your healthy living checklist.

Hi Beth!
First of all thanks for taking out some time to go through my recipe and liking it 🙂
Secondly, I went through your post and it’s very much true and inspirational. I too had put on some extra kilos post pregnancy and felt uncomfortable to go out in my favorite dresses. However I’ve followed the same rules as you’ve mentioned above except taking the multi vitamins and am very much happy to cut few kilos off my body and that too without following a strict diet 🙂

I think listening to your body and what it needs, whether it’s healthier food, rest, exercise, or more water is good advice to follow. Our bodies are pretty miraculous and will tell us what we need 🙂

Beautiful:this is beautiful and helps me get trough my mild Cabral palsy. I have cp on my right side only. Having mild cp is tough and hard sometimes. I paint, singing and dancing and watching movies help me feel better about my cp and I do horse back riding I do Hippotherapy in the spring, summer and fall and chiropractic care. All of that helps me get in line and stronger so i can walk better. I have a walker and I’m trying to get off of it. I didn’t have a walker in my school days. And like I said:Singing, art, movies and dancing makes me feel better.
